The South Tyrolean cinema release of Michael Kofler's ZWEITLAND on November 20, 2025. This historical family drama explores the complex chapter of South Tyrol’s “bomb years” around 1960—a period scarcely depicted in cinema to date. Thomas Prenn and Laurence Rupp star as the contrasting brothers, alongside Aenne Schwarz in the role of a forward-thinking character. Notably, both director Michael Kofler and lead actor Thomas Prenn hail from South Tyrol.

Synopsis
South Tyrol, 1961. The northern Italian region is shaken by a series of separatist bomb attacks. While the young farmer’s son Paul dreams of escaping the hopelessness of his village to study painting, his older brother Anton fights uncompromisingly to protect the German-speaking minority—even if it means using violence. When Anton is revealed as one of the perpetrators, he flees, leaving the family farm and his loved ones behind. Reluctantly, Paul puts his own plans on hold to support Anton’s wife Anna and their young son. As tensions escalate and the Italian police crack down, Anna increasingly resists the patriarchal structures around her. Meanwhile, Paul faces a choice between family loyalty and personal self-fulfillment.
In his feature film debut, director Michael Kofler delivers a compelling and powerful portrayal of the events surrounding South Tyrol’s “Night of Fire.” Thomas Prenn (HOCHWALD) and Laurence Rupp (VENI VIDI VICI) give nuanced performances as contrasting brothers, alongside Aenne Schwarz (LEIBNIZ – CHRONIK EINES VERSCHOLLENEN BILDES) in the role of a forward-thinking visionary.
